Amazon Prime seems to have figured out that their games are a mine while determining the formula for their new series. After the success of the Fallout series, the platform announced the Tomb Raider series, and now it will make Yakuza a series.
After Fallout, Amazon Prime announces Yakuza series
The history and chronology of Sega’s Yakuza games is very hard to follow. Continuing since the original Yakuza in 2005 and most recently releasing its ninth game, Like A Dragon: Infinite Wealth in January 2024, which was a huge success for SEGA.
Although the original name of the game was Yakuza, SEGA has been promoting it worldwide as Like a Dragon for the last five years. Amazon Prime’s series will make a compromise and be called Like a Dragon, not Yakuza.
Amazon’s series will not be the first live-action production based on the game. In the past, a production aired in Japan in 2010. A second one was released later. It’s called Kurohyō, and you can find it on YouTube.
Shot in Japan and in Japanese, Amazon plans to subtitle and dub the series for international audiences. Starring Ryoma Takeuchi (Kamen Rider: Drive) as the lead character Kazuma Kiryu and directed by Masaharu Take (We Make Antiques) and Kengo Takimoto (Kamen Teacher), the six-episode series will take place between 1995 and 2005.
The story of the Amazon Yakuza series will follow the life, childhood friends and the repercussions of the decisions of a fearsome and unique Yakuza warrior with a strong sense of justice, duty and humanity.
The program is understood to have the official seal of approval of Masayoshi Yokoyama, writer and producer of the video games, with Yokoyama serving as executive producer. He has made it clear that he does not want to rewrite events based on his previous games.
Like A Dragon: Yakuza will be released in two batches of three episodes, one on October 25th and the other on November 1st, but there is no word yet on how long each episode will run.
